Welcome to the website of the ACT Children & Young People Commissioner (CYPC)
The ACT Children & Young People Commissioner (CYPC) is one of three Commissioners within the ACT Human Rights Commission.
The current Commissioner is Alasdair Roy, who is assisted by one full-time Senior Adviser.
The CYPC is an independent statutory office created under the Human Rights Commission Act 2005. This means that the CYPC is funded by the ACT Government, but is independent from the Government.
The CYPC has a number of roles, including:
- Consulting with children and young people
- Resolving complaints and concerns about services for children & young people
- Providing advice to government and community organisations about how to improve services for children and young people
Put simply, the role of the CYPC is to help make Canberra a better place for children and young people.
If you would like to know more, or you would like to talk with the CYPC, please phone 6205 2222, or email ACTkids@act.gov.au. Or, you can visit the CYPC at Level 4, 12 Moore Street, Canberra City (near the Jolimont Centre on Northbourne Avenue).
The CYPC is open between 9.00am - 5.00pm, Monday to Friday.
A brochure which provides more information about the CYPC is available for download.
As well as the Children & Young People Commissioner, there are two other Commissioners within the Commission:
- Mary Durkin: Disability & Community Services Commissioner, and Health Services Commissioner
- Helen Watchirs: Human Rights & Discrimination Commissioner
The Commission operates from a model of collegiality, and does not have an administrative head. All three Commissioners have equal seniority and decision making authority within the Commission.
