Public Advocate

Who is the Public Advocate?

The ACT Public Advocate is Ms Jodie Griffiths-Cook; she is also the ACT Children and Young People Commissioner.

Jodie and her team work to protect and promote the rights of people whose situation or condition makes them potentially vulnerable to abuse, exploitation or neglect, or a combination of those things.

We advocate for people who may not have other ways of having their rights protected or being heard, including children and young people, those with severe mental health conditions, and people with complex disability needs. We have particular responsibilities for those children, young people and adults who come to our attention because government or the courts have made a decision that limits their rights.

If you are worried about your rights, worried about someone you know, or have concerns that a system or organisation might be limiting someone’s rights, then we may be able to help you. You can find out more about how we can help, or other organisations that may also be able to support you here:

HRC Child Safe Standards Statement of Commitment

We are committed to protecting and promoting the rights, safety, and wellbeing of children and young people. We are actively implementing the 10 Child Safe Standards in a way that is culturally safe and inclusive for all children and young people, including by respecting and valuing the diverse and unique identities and experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people, and their families.

We take a zero-tolerance approach to child abuse, and will seek to ensure all employees, volunteers, contracted staff, and executives uphold their responsibilities.
