Promoting the Rights of Canberrans Living in Retirement Villages
The ACT Human Rights Commission makes it easy for older people to raise concerns or complaints about retirement villages in the ACT.
You can contact us for a free & confidential chat about your concerns and we can give you information about your options or help you make a complaint.
You can talk to us anonymously or confidentially while we work out the best way to address your concern.
Generally we will try and help you resolve the concern or complaint. We might get some information from the village and we will usually work with you and the village to try and resolve the complaint quickly and informally.
Some of the issues we have helped people resolve:
- Communication & information provision
- Privacy concerns
- Slow responses to maintenance requests
- Delays in listing or sale of a unit
- Not getting a response to a complaint or concern you have raised
We can also deal with other issues that affect older people living in retirement villages:
- Issues with home based supports or programs
- Abuse, neglect or exploitation of older people
- Age discrimination
- Access to health services
If we can not deal with an issue or the issues can not be resolved through our process we will talk you to you about other options. This might include taking the complaint to the ACT Administrative & Civil Tribunal (ACAT).
Information about your rights in a retirement village in the ACT is also available in the Retirement Village Handbook on the Access Canberra website.
It’s safe & confidential to call us for information about our process & your options.
