Protecting the rights of people with a disability in Canberra
No one should be treated unfairly because of a disability, including disabilities due to an injury, illness or ageing, or needing an assistance animal. ACT law protects your right to be treated equally and to receive reasonable adjustments or accommodations as required.
It’s easy for you to raise concerns or complaints with us about disability discrimination, disability services, poor treatment or vilification.
You can contact us anonymously or confidentially while we work out the best way to address your concern.
You can contact us for a free & confidential chat about your concerns and we can give you information about your options or help you make a complaint. The complaint process is accessible, and we can help you write the complaint down and can refer you for advocacy or legal advice if that would assist.
We can help you deal with concerns about:
- discrimination in employment, education, accommodation, service provision
- vilification on the basis of gender identity, sexuality, HIV status
- sexual harassment
- sexuality & gender identity conversion practices
- health services & individual health practitioners (e.g. doctors, nurses, dentists)
- abuse, neglect or exploitation of people over 60 or an adult with a disability
- services for people with a disability, including personal care, respite care, service coordination and case management
- services for victims of crime
- services for children & young people
- occupancy & accommodation
We will try and help you resolve the concern or complaint. If we can’t deal with an issue or the issues cannot be resolved through our process, we will talk to you about other options.
