The ACT Human Rights Commission has released its new strategic plan 2025-28, committing to a range of measures supporting its overarching goal of an inclusive Canberra where human rights and access to justice are available to all.
In its new strategic plan, the Commission has committed to:
- Building strong partnerships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
- Enhancing the Commission’s education and outreach programmes
- Championing the rights, safety and wellbeing of children and young people
- Advocating for better investment in early intervention and diversionary programs for young people at risk
- Improving service delivery and protection of community members by effectively responding to concerns and complaint handling, and via systemic investigations and stakeholder engagement
- Pursuing a rights-based approach for victims of crime
- Advocating for additional rights in the Human Rights Act, particularly socio-economic rights
“I am looking forward to meeting with many more local Aboriginal organisations and community groups as the Commission continues to advocate for the fulfilment of rights for all in the ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community,” Commission President and Human Rights Commissioner, Dr Penelope Mathew said.
“I will also be a strong advocate for the completion of the ACT Human Rights Act through the addition of the right to housing and other socio-economic rights.
“We will be examining the right to housing at our International Human Rights Day forum on 10 December and are planning a lively event in which we unpack key questions such as what the human right to housing means for individuals and government.”
