The Commission supports the campaign for a national charter of human rights in Australia and is pleased to be part of the Human Rights Law Centre’s 101 cases campaign. This video shows how the ACT Human Rights Act helped protect the right to education for refugees and asylum seekers.
"A national charter of human rights would protect Australians, no matter their state or territory, when government policies and procedures impinge on rights," Commission President, Dr Helen Watchirs said.
"Government over-reach can have a devastating impact on people’s lives and wellbeing as we saw during the Robodebt Royal Commission."
"We believe that a debacle like Robodebt would not have occurred if Australia had a national human rights charter, and a robust human rights culture operating at the federal level," Dr Watchirs said.
