To mark ACT Youth Week 2025 (10–20 April), staff from across the ACT Human Rights Commission joined forces to collect pantry donations for two emergency relief services supporting young people in Canberra.
The initiative supported the YWCA Canberra Food Hub and The Junction Youth Health Service, both of which provide vital support to young people facing food insecurity and financial hardship.
Over several weeks, staff donated a wide range of essential pantry items – from cereal and canned goods to hygiene products.
“At its heart, Youth Week is about listening to and amplifying young voices,” said Jodie Griffiths-Cook, ACT Public Advocate and Children and Young People Commissioner. “We hope this small act of solidarity reminds young people they are valued, their wellbeing matters, and that their rights must be protected and upheld.”
Young people who access these pantries shared their appreciation:
“Without the Food Hub service, I honestly don't know how I would put food on the table. It's a lifeline for me and my family.”
“I’m extremely grateful for food pantries. They’ve been a huge support in tough times, and I can’t thank them enough for what they do.”
The Commission thanks the YWCA Canberra and The Junction Youth Health Service for the incredible work they do supporting young people across our region.
