Status as a Parent or Carer

Examples of the types of complaints we have resolved include:

Family responsibilities discrimination in the workplace

A woman alleged discrimination on the basis of her family responsibilities, regarding the way she was spoken to in the workplace. She also alleged disability discrimination in the work conditions she was subjected to upon her return after an injury. The matter was resolved in conciliation with the employer agreeing to offer the woman a position that she was happy with.

Access to flexible work arrangements

A woman employed as a nurse complained that on her return from maternity leave she was discriminated against by being denied access to flexible work arrangements in the form of part-time work. The woman was seeking to work part-time to care for her child and noted that she had been allowed to work part-time when previously returning from maternity leave.

The complaint was resolved on the basis of a payment of $1,800 financial compensation. The employment relationship ended as the woman found alternative employment where she was able to work part-time
