What is Redress
In response to the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, the Australian Government set up the National Redress Scheme. The National Redress Scheme’s purpose is to support people who have experienced institutional child sexual abuse by recognising the harm caused, holding the responsible institutions accountable, and connecting applicants to free, confidential support services. The Scheme started on 1 July 2018 with applications needing to be made by 30 June 2027 and ending 30 June 2028.
You can apply if:
- you experienced institutional child sexual abuse before turning 18, and
- the abuse occurred before 1 July 2018, and
- you were born before 30 June 2010, and
- You are an Australian citizen or permanent resident when you apply, unless an exception applies to you.
Please see Who can apply | National Redress Scheme for further information
The National Redress Scheme can offer eligible survivors:
- access to counselling and psychological care
- a redress payment (also referred to as a monetary payment)
- a Direct Personal Response (DPR) from the responsible institution(s), including an apology or acknowledgement.
