Support for people impacted by major motor vehicle offences

On 31 May 2023, the Victims of Crime Regulation 2000 was amended to include eligibility in support of families who lost loved ones because of ACT criminal offences involving motor vehicle collisions. The regulation change was the result of extensive advocacy and recommendations from the Projects Assisting Victims’ Experience and Recovery Review Report (2021), commissioned by the ACT Government.

If you have been bereaved, seriously injured, i.e. grievous bodily harm, or impacted by a motor vehicle offence in the ACT, you may be eligible for assistance from Victim Support ACT or relevant agencies.

Where eligible, our services can include access to case coordination, information about the Financial Assistance Scheme, therapeutic supports and liaison with stakeholders, including ACT Policing and the Coroner’s Court or criminal courts. With your consent, we can also liaise with the Defined Benefits Information Service with you or on your behalf to assist navigating the Motor Accident Injuries Scheme. We will talk with you about your circumstances and the possible supports we or other services can provide.

Please contact us if you are unsure whether you are eligible to receive support. Where we cannot assist, we will provide you with information and if required, refer you to appropriate services.
